Growing Prostitution in Kathmandu

Government policies[edit]. Although there are no laws in Nepal criminalizing sex work specifically, there are some laws that were enacted throughout the 1980s.In recent years, millions of women and girls have been trafficked across borders and within countries. In the late 17th century, the brothel area of Kamathipura was established to service British troops in what was then called Bombay, India. In 2004, the cost to buy a trafficked girl from Nepal in what is now called Mumbai is 100,000 to 120,000 rupees ($2,004 to $2,405). Thamel is the tourist centre of Nepal. It is the most popular nightlife area in Kathmandu. There are hundreds of restaurants, bars, clubs and dance bars. Most of the bars, restaurants, and pubs close before midnight. But, some clubs and bars are opening till late. More than 70% of the regular customers of pubs, bars and clubs are Nepalese. You can find many younger locals hanging around these establishments. Please avoid making any unnecessary arguments with them.
